Basement Kitchen

There is a strong possibility that we will have family coming to stay with us for maybe 3 months next summer.  So what do you do when you have 5 more people living in your house with your family of six?  Plus we have 3 dogs.  Well you add a small kitchen and half bath. We had plans to do this "eventually" for our boys.  Sometimes your kids move out then move back in or if they have families and come to stay with us for a visit.  It would be nice to have an area for them that would feel like their own space.

So the cleaning, donating and organizing has begun.  It was a DISASTER down there.  To much stuff!

What I kept I moved to this corner near the whole house air cleaner-

This corner was piled almost to the ceiling with hubby's work stuff.  We took that out to the shop & barn.

This little guy fell on my head while I was taking stuff outside.  Then the next day I spotted him on the door but he stayed put!

Bathroom For Now

Here's the updated pictures of our master bathroom for now.

Still on our list of things to do:
- replace fiberglass tub with a tiled shower
- tile the floor
-trim: crown, base & casing

Ignore the messy paint lines near the ceiling eventually crown will go up.  And some day soon I need to iron the shower curtain.  It's a wrinkly mess!!

Bathroom Soffits are GONE!

Back in 2012 Jacob, he's 13 now,  & I took out the doorway that divided the tub/toilet side from the sink sink.  Then over this summer we took out most of the soffit over the sink.   From September 2012 to this year the bathroom was a total mess with the holes in the wall/ceiling from taking out the doorway & header for it.

Hubby & Jacob finished taking out the soffits and patched up the ceiling and walls over Christmas.

Here's the bathroom before:

I painted the cabinets, and hubby replaced the counter top, new faucet & mirror. Then I wanted to try blue colors.  That didn't last long!!

Then I started to take out the soffit.

Here's the tub soffit progress

We sanded the drywall mud last night and got it all primed.  Today I'm painting!

Eventually we'll do something with the tub.  We have all the tiles to do the shower.  Our plan is to take out the fiberglass all in one tub/shower and just tile in a shower this summer......hopefully.  Then eventually we'll get to the floor. Currently the tub side is stick on tiles and the sink side has hardwood clear coated oak.  I'm thinking of going with the tiles that look like wood floors.

Repurpose A Picture From A Book

I've been looking for two small pictures to put in the frame I found.  Then I realized we had 2 Black Beauty books and one was all chewed up from when Dozer was a puppy.

I cut out the 2 pictures I wanted then colored them in with colored pencils.  Inexpensive and easy!

 Here's the one I cut out and colored for our bathroom.

Bathroom Shelf

My mother in law gave us this cute little shelf.  It fit right where I wanted to put some floating shelves or some sort of cabinet.

I gave it a light sanding and primed it.

Then I painted it with the same paint I used on the bathroom vanity.  It was paint I had color matched to the java gel stain that I used on our doors & trim.

 

Now to find a picture to put in the small frame on the shelf.

Still to do in the bathroom is trim out the closet door, replace the tub with a big tiled shower, redo the floor, finish the drywall repair, take out the soffits and put new crown moulding in.

Toilet Update

I saw an oil rubbed bronze toilet flush handle at Lowe's.  It was only $20 so I decided to grab it.  A nice cheap way to update the toilet to fit with the other hardware/fixtures in the bathroom.


You just need to take the tank lid off then unhook the chain to the rod of the toilet handle.  Then use wrench or some pliers to unscrew the nut that holds the handle on.  Pull out the old handle.  Put the knew handle rod through the hole in the tank.  Put the nut back on and tighten it.  Lastly reattach the chain.  It took only a minute to do.

Bathroom Towel Holders

In keeping with the brown and blue theme for the bathroom the towel rings needed a little updating.  To the rescue came a can of oil rubbed bronze spray paint.

We did not have anything to hang our bath towels on after taking out the handicap bars.  So I found a small piece of scrap popular wood in hubby's workshop and had him router the edge. I gave it a good sanding then primed and painted it white.  He then screwed  it on the wall and attached the oil rubbed bronze hooks I bought from Lowe's.

Bathroom Cabinet Update

The bathroom cabinet started out a golden oak stained color.  Then I painted it whit with a glaze.  I didn't really like it either way.  It needed something!
After adding some trim and repainting I was ready to put it back in the bathroom.

We hung the cabinet not to long ago after adding trim, painting it and adding new hardware to it.

We are the 2nd owners of the house.  The people previous owners are the ones that had the house built.  I'm not sure why they hung the cabinet the way they did but they hung it on the wall to the right of the toilet instead of over the toilet.   After redoing the cabinet I had hubby hang it over the toilet.

I ended up going with paint color #2.  It's called The Good Life from Valspar paint.

Here's a peak at the vanity area.  I'm really loving this color with the browns!

Oh as you can see looking in the  mirror the wall still needs to be patched up so I didn't go to crazy painting that wall yet.

 This is what we originally started out with when it was the guest bedroom & bathroom.  Since I am the only female in the house all the girly pink stuff went into this room!
